BREAKING NEW GROUND
During the election period, the things that people complained about most, apart from unemployment, was inadequate housing and the quality of houses.
"During the election period one of the things that our people complained about most, apart from unemployment, was housing. They complained about inadequate housing, and of the quality and standards of houses. We promised them we would attend to the problem...This was part of our societal contract... we are breaking new ground to house all."
An extract from the statement by LN Sisulu, Minister of Housing, at the occasion of the parliamentary media briefing, Cape Town, 25 May 2004.
SHF in action to speed delivery of housing
To assess how to most effectively bring itself into alignment with the Minister of Housing's Breaking New Ground Strategy, the SHF is currently evaluating the seven new business plans put out by the Department of Housing.
Through 2005, the SHF will be developing new and revised products to stimulate housing delivery to the subsidized housing market. Plans include:
- Looking into how to improve building standards
- Focusing on housing consumer education
- Rapidly expanding the cadre of trainers and consultants in the housing sector to speed the delivery of housing to its market.
