RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AT SHF

As custodians of social housing in South Africa, we produce leading
research that informs a broad spectrum of people interested and involved in social housing here and overseas.

Mainly, we channel our research energies into areas of social housing where the demand for information is greatest.

Research informs policy

Some of our research leads to policy making. A recent significant example is the extensive research we did to provide policy guidelines to inform the new social housing policy for South Africa

Mostly, we generate information to support policy and sector development processes. We also host and attend regular workshops and conferences where we gather and share information about policy-making in the sector.

Our role is primarily to educate the sector about best practices and to stimulate two-way communication around policy evolution in the sector.

Rental Housing Research

The demand for low-cost, quality rental housing in South Africa is very high and, as this sector develops the need for empirical information becomes paramount. In this database you will find a range of research reports relevant to rental housing which may be of interest to developers, funders/financiers, NGOs, government officers, research consultants, community groups, academics and students.

SHF would also like to invite interested parties to submit relevant research reports for consideration to be uploaded on this database.

Socio-economic demand surveys

The SHF has been involved in managing and conducting socio-economic demand surveys to determine the need and demand for rental housing in various areas. The SHF sometimes project manages and guides selected professional housing consultants through the research processes. This research is provided for SHIs, provinces and their agencies and local authorities.

Sector research

There is demand for SHF research from local and international students and researchers on cross-cutting development issues and best practice in the social housing sector Soon we'll be pro-actively raising our academic profile by producing quality research reports and discussion papers on various sector issues. Given our experience in the South African social housing sector, SHF has expertise to advance work in the sector.

Conferences and workshops

We regularly attend external conferences and workshops - sometimes up to one a week - where we represent the interests of the social housing sector and report back to national, provincial and local government and other stakeholders.
